Nguyen, Kid Who Took IELTS Test at 10, Pass Exceptionally, Raises Mixed Reactions

Fifth-grader Nguyen Minh Duc, who took the IELTS test at age 10, achieved impressive scores.

Fifth-grader Nguyen Minh Duc, who completed the test on August 13th, achieved an 8.0 in listening and speaking, a 7.0 in reading, and a 6.5 in writing.

He had initially anticipated a score of 7.0. His fascination with English began at age two when his kindergarten introduced weekly English classes with foreign instructors.

Although his family initially hired a foreign teacher for home tutoring when he was three, they decided to stop to prioritize his Vietnamese language development.

Instead, they supplied him with English children’s books and he pursued independent learning, discovering websites like Epic and Razkid.

This approach allowed him to excel in the IELTS reading section, which encompassed various topics. He also performed well in the listening part due to years of watching English movies without subtitles.

He further honed his speaking skills in an English debate class and conversing with his older sister. In the IELTS speaking test, he discussed London’s historical significance and iconic architecture as a city he’d like to reside in long-term.

He found the second writing question, concerning the busy work culture and its consequences, challenging but drew from his reading experiences to compose a response.

Duc’s parents noted that while there is no age limit to take the IELTS test, IDP recommends a minimum age of 16. According to IELTS organizers IDP and the British Council, only 10% of test-takers in Vietnam in 2022 scored 7.5 or higher.

His achievement was however received with mixed feelings.

Some wondered why a kid of his age would go through the rigorous stress of writing a test. While others insisted that the test is of no use since he won’t be needing it in couple of years.

hanoivc said: Fair play to him but imagine being 12 and your IELTS certificate expiring.

Jim B: What’s he gunna do with it? IELTS expires after a few years.

However, some people praised the kid and his parents.

paulcfc7 wrote: Smart kid, smart parents. There will be readers of this article that will criticise both parents and educators. The reality is, that kids will be fighting for the best university positions, and employers will be fighting for the most highly suitable employees. Knowledge is power. Give your kids the best opportunity to succeed in the rat race.

iffatnazli56 added: It’s a matter of great pride for parents who facilitated him with everything he needed. In my view, such kids are on the right track and they set their goals and cherish their accomplishments.

While Peter added: Congratulations to Nguyen Minh Duc – and those around him who have provided guidance. It’s a wonderful achievement.
