Cursory: The girls of St. John Vianney Science College, Igbariam, Anambra State, emerged as the national champions of the National Girls in ICT Competition 2024. Their winning project, M-Tag VR, impressed judges with its virtual reality experience showcasing Nigerian landmarks and cultural richness. The girls progressed from the state to regional levels, triumphing over strong contenders from all six geopolitical zones.

In a remarkable achievement, the girls of St. John Vianney Science College, Igbariam, Anambra State, emerged victorious in the National Girls in ICT Competition 2024, clinching the national championship title on Wednesday. Organized by the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, the competition celebrates technology innovation among secondary school girls across Nigeria.
The college’s winning project, M-Tag VR, developed by Immaculate Ikegwuonu, Camilla Anyadike, and Nweke-Nonso Oluchi, under the guidance of their coach, John Onuigbo, captivated judges with its virtual reality experience. The project allows users to explore iconic Nigerian landmarks like Zuma Rock while delving into the cultural richness of Nigerian tribes.
The journey to victory began at the state level, where the girls clinched the Anambra State title before advancing to claim the South-Eastern regional championship, triumphing over teams from Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Enugu states. Their exceptional project and skills impressed judges throughout the competition, culminating in a thrilling national victory against strong contenders from all six geopolitical zones of the country.
Reacting to their win, Immaculate Ikegwuonu expressed gratitude, stating, “We are so grateful for this opportunity! Thanks to our school which motivates us to pursue careers in ICT. Through this win, we hope to inspire other girls to do the same.”
Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, the Director of St. John Vianney Science College, hailed the achievement as monumental, emphasizing the school’s commitment to empowering young women in STEM fields. He commended the dedication and talent of the girls, highlighting their ability to innovate and problem-solve.
“This national championship is a monumental achievement for our school and a source of immense pride. It exemplifies our commitment to empowering young women in STEM fields.

The Operations Lead of Kodex Africa, Idika Ukpai, said the National Girls in ICT Competition is facilitated through implementing hubs in each state, which provide logistical support and ensure a smooth competition process. Kodex Africa supported this team from Anambra State.
