Nigerian student Ibrahim Mejama of General Hassan College, Bauchi State, won a bronze medal at the 2026 International Mathematics, Science and Engineering Fair in Turkey with his biogas electric stove project, earning a promised university scholarship and qualification for a higher-level science competition in Brazil.

A Nigerian student, Ibrahim Mejama of General Hassan College, Yelwa, Bauchi State, has earned a bronze medal at the 2026 International Mathematics, Science and Engineering Fair (IMSEF) held in Cesme, Turkey.
The achievement was announced by Iheanacho Achoakawa, Coordinator of the Society for the Promotion of Science and Technology (SPST), who said the competition took place from June 1 to June 5 and attracted participants from about 25 countries across Africa, Europe, and other regions.
Mejama represented Nigeria with his innovative project titled “Design and Construction of a Biogas Electric Stove Using a Remote Control,” which secured third place in the competition.
According to Achoakawa, Nigeria was represented by only one student, making the accomplishment particularly significant. He noted that invitations were sent to education ministries nationwide, but only a few states completed the selection process required for participation.
He emphasized the importance of supporting science and technology education, stating that international competitions help students develop innovation, creativity, and scientific excellence.
In recognition of his achievement, the Bauchi State Government has reportedly promised Mejama a university scholarship. He has also qualified to represent Nigeria at a higher-level science competition scheduled to take place in Brazil in October 2026.
Achoakawa highlighted the success of Nigerian students in previous international competitions and called for increased support from governments, schools, and stakeholders to encourage greater participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programmes.
He expressed confidence that such opportunities would help nurture future innovators capable of contributing to Nigeria’s technological growth and economic development.
