Cursory: Gianna and Tianna Tout-Puissant, 17-year-old twin sisters from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, have been accepted into Harvard University. Both sisters plan to major in chemistry on the pre-medicine track, aspiring to become surgeons. They also excel in varsity basketball and hope to join Harvard’s Division I women’s team.

Twin sisters Gianna and Tianna Tout-Puissant, both 17 years old from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, have been accepted at Harvard University where they will play basketball and pursue careers as surgeons.
Despite being born more than two months prematurely, the twins won over health obstacles during their infancy. Overcoming these challenges, they persevered and achieved a remarkable feat by gaining acceptance to Harvard University.
With an acceptance rate of just 3.4% out of a staggering 56,937 applicants for the class of 2027, their admission is a testament to their exceptional abilities and determination.
“We logged into our application portals at the exact same time, and then we read, ‘Congratulations,’ on each other’s screens, and then we just started all screaming,” Gianna told The Morning Call.
“My mom was crying. It was crazy.” The twins, who recently graduated from Moravian Academy in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, said going to Harvard is “surreal” and they look forward to joining a community of “hardworking and out-of-the-box thinkers.”
“To see them and how they’ve blossomed into the young women they are today, it’s like they’re miracle babies,” said their mother Leah Tout-Puissant.
Upon entering Harvard, both sisters outlined their intentions to pursue a chemistry major within the pre-medicine track, envisioning a future path to medical school.
Gianna contemplates a career in either cardiothoracic surgery or neurosurgery, while Tianna exhibits a particular fascination with neurosurgery, driven by the intricate connections between different brain regions and their influence on personality traits.
They both share a keen interest in the hands-on nature of surgical procedures and the potential benefits of pharmaceutical drugs for patients.
Reflecting on their exceptional experiences with the subject in high school, they made the deliberate choice to major in chemistry. Their commitment was evident in their meticulous note-taking and late-night study sessions to grasp complex concepts.
Also, they frequently assisted their peers with studying and problem-solving, showcasing their dedication to academic collaboration.
“I think a lot of their peers thought it was just natural for them,” said their chemistry teacher Cole Wisdo.
“But I had the real pleasure of seeing just how crazy hard they were working at it.”
Alongside their academic accomplishments, the twins showcased an impressive dedication to varsity basketball during their time in high school. Through their relentless efforts, Gianna emerged as an exceptional scorer, while Tianna demonstrated reliability and skill as a point guard.
They dedicated numerous hours to honing their abilities, aspiring to secure positions on Harvard’s Division I women’s team. Furthermore, the sisters deeply value their strong bond, regarding each other as their closest companions.
They share almost everything and even reside in the same room, with bunk beds as a testament to their shared experiences. Although they possess similar work ethics, they recognize and appreciate their distinct personalities.
“I know this sounds cheesy, but we’re very yin and yang,” Tianna said. “She says this crazy idea, and then I’m like, ‘OK, let’s think about the pros and cons of this before we do it.’ And then she gets me to step out of my comfort zone.”
As they prepare to embrace the next chapter of their lives at Harvard, they are excited to continue their journey still together, supporting and challenging each other along the way.
“We were really set on going to college together,” Gianna said. “And the fact that we were able to both get into such an amazing college was a dream come true.”
