64-Year-Old Nigerian Father of Five Graduates as a Nurse After Studying Alongside His Son

64-year-old Nigerian father of five, John Adesoye, graduated with a nursing degree in the UK after studying alongside his son, overcoming his humble beginnings and career changes through determination and a lifelong passion for learning.

A 64-year-old Nigerian immigrant living in the United Kingdom, John Adesoye, has achieved an inspiring academic milestone after graduating with a nursing degree from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol).

Adesoye, who is a father of five, completed his nursing education through a combination of a two-year nursing associate programme and a two-year nursing apprenticeship with an NHS Foundation Trust in Bristol. He has since secured a nursing position at Southmead Hospital, where he completed his apprenticeship.

Born into a poor farming family in Nigeria, Adesoye developed an early interest in electronics after becoming fascinated by the way his family’s radio worked. His passion eventually led him to Greece, where he worked as an electronics technician servicing electronic equipment, before later relocating to the UK.

Despite beginning university later in life, Adesoye remained determined to pursue his passion for learning. During his studies, he spent most of his time training at Southmead Hospital but also attended university once a week, where he unexpectedly found himself studying alongside his son, Daniel, who was pursuing a degree in Creative Music Technology.

Adesoye said being surrounded by younger students made him feel young again and described his opportunity to attend university as something he embraced wholeheartedly. He explained that his curiosity and love for learning had been with him since childhood and that he did not take the opportunity for higher education for granted.

Following his graduation, Adesoye encouraged people not to allow their age to prevent them from pursuing education or achieving their dreams. He said people should not listen to those who tell them they are too old for university, adding that people are often more intelligent and stronger than they believe.

His remarkable journey serves as an inspiring reminder that determination, curiosity and a willingness to learn can help people achieve their goals regardless of their age or background.
