Cursory: Nineteen-year-old Owami Ngqono is set to become the youngest graduate at the University of Fort Hare’s 2024 Autumn Graduation, earning her Bachelor of Agriculture in Economics degree. Hailing from Butterworth, Eastern Cape, Owami entered UFH Alice Campus at 16 with three matric distinctions from Lamplough High School. Encouraged by her teacher, she found her passion for agriculture and plans to pursue further studies.

At just 19 years old, Owami Ngqono is making history as she prepares to become the youngest graduate at the University of Fort Hare’s 2024 Autumn Graduation. Owami, who hails from Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, began her academic journey at UFH Alice Campus at the age of 16.

With three matric distinctions in Agricultural Science, Maths Literacy, and isiXhosa from Lamplough High School, Owami embarked on her university studies with determination and ambition. Her pursuit of a Bachelor of Agriculture in Economics degree has been marked by dedication and hard work.

As she prepares to collect her degree next week, Owami’s achievement serves as an inspiration to young students across the country. Her remarkable journey from high school to university showcases the power of perseverance and the importance of seizing every opportunity for academic success.

At the age of five, Owami Ngqono embarked on her academic journey, laying the foundation for what would become a remarkable educational trajectory. Throughout her schooling career, she has been praised as the “youngest and brightest” by both peers and teachers, a testament to her exceptional intellect and dedication.

Now on the brink of turning 20 in June, Owami remains steadfast in her pursuit of academic excellence. Raised by her maternal grandparents in a loving and nurturing environment, she credits them for instilling in her the values of seizing every opportunity that comes her way.

“I grew up in a loving and nurturing home under my grandparents who taught me to seize every opportunity that comes my way, and I have been doing exactly that. The plan now is to pursue a master’s degree and hopefully, a doctoral degree.”

It was at Lamplough High School that Owami’s passion for agriculture was ignited and nurtured by a dedicated teacher.

“I developed a passion for the field of Agriculture and the science behind it, and fortunately I had a teacher who was willing to support and nurture that passion.”

Recognizing her keen interest in the field, her teacher pointed her towards the University of Fort Hare, renowned for its excellence in agricultural studies.

“He advised me that it is the best institution for agricultural studies, and I must say, he was correct.”

Now, as Owami prepares to graduate with honors from UFH, she stands as a shining example of the power of passion, perseverance, and the unwavering pursuit of one’s dreams. Her journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring students everywhere, showcasing the transformative impact of dedication and hard work.

Owami Ngqono’s journey through university has been marked by gratitude and appreciation for the support she’s received along the way. As she reflects on her transition from high school to tertiary education, Owami expresses her thanks to the friendly staff, students, and a supportive relative who made her transition smooth.

“thanks to the friendliness of staff students and also a relative who was doing her final year when I started my journey year. Over the years, this place has always felt like home. During my time here, I have gained so much valuable knowledge that has empowered me for the industry.”

“My mother has been one of my greatest motivators. Even though she had to put her dream of becoming a qualified accountant on hold several times, she never gave up. Now we will both graduate with our first degrees, one month apart.”
