In her words; “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28

“It started here; in my mother’s little shop where I would shopkeep in her absence, using the time to do my homework, study, and complete projects. It was one of the places that I unconsciously became a dreamer; dreaming of a better future, which required that I prioritise my education. While it may not be what catapults everyone from poverty to security, I recognized that education would be the key to opening some very important doors for me – which it has.

“Coming from a period where the finances were so tight that I’d leave home without bus fare and program myself to hustle my way to school, even if I had to hike or ask a bus driver for a ‘bligh’, I later got my CXC CSEC results and that, before June 28, 2022 was my proudest accomplishment ever.

“I realised that if I maintained this level of focus, discipline, resilience and hard work, I could fulfil all my outrageous dreams, especially now with Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour.

“Therefore, today, it gives me immense joy to announce that I have been #ChosenForChevening, a highly competitive fully-funded scholarship programme for postgraduate studies funded by the UK Government and partners.

“I will be pursuing a Master of Arts in International Social Development with the University of East Anglia. I am thrilled and very grateful for this opportunity and anticipate the indelible impact it will have on my personal and professional development; being a key part of my process of becoming and helping me inspire others to become.

“This achievement of being a Chevening Scholar comes on the heels of two of the most difficult hurdles that I have ever had to overcome; the deaths of my brother, Darrel Francois and cousin, Keran Francois and I said to God, “Father, I need this win. While I believe my faith can withstand another disappointment, I don’t want it to. Favour me God, I need this break.”

“He heard my cry and answered me, hallelujah! I know without Him, it would not have been possible. So, whether you are going through a difficult time or not, be encouraged that God hears your prayers (whatever they may be) and trust that better days will come.

“I am grateful to everyone who contributed to my journey thus far and hope to continue making you proud!.”

Narrating how she got the scholarship, she wrote:

What helped me prepare is sticking to what Chevening suggested via their website (chevening.org) as well as their social media pages.

One of the most critical things I noted was that when writing your essays, which is the first step, you need to use the STAR approach (which is well explained on the website). However, your main task is to convince Chevening that you are presently doing excellent work as a leader in your country in whatever field you work and you are a suitable candidate for further empowerment and networking opportunities in order to further enhance your country.

Join groups like Chevening Aspirants on Facebook and look to Chevening Alumni within your country who may be able to guide you on the journey“.

Her celebratory post has received thousands of reactions. Below are a few.

Nicole wrote: God heard your prayers and he answered them. Now just put God first; then your Mom and keep dreaming big and realizing some of those visions.

Musa Benjamin wrote: Congratulations Yasmine N. François. Indeed, God is merciful and kind… I sympathize with you on the losses, and now, I celebrate with you… More success coming your way in Jesus Name.

Pauline wrote: Is there ANYTHING impossible for our God? My sister in Christ, congratulations. THIS is just the beginning. I can’t wait to hear of the great accomplishments your future holds, as your faith in Him continues to propel you.
