Renowned Professional Body Raises Concern Over Shortage of Female Engineers

Cursory:The Association of Practising Women Engineers in Nigeria organized a workshop to inspire young girls to pursue engineering. The association mentors female engineers, offers entrepreneurship training, and aims to bridge the gender gap in engineering. The event also included scholarship awards to support young female talents in this field.

The Association of Practising Women Engineers in Nigeria has issued a plea to parents, guardians, and government authorities to actively promote engineering as a viable profession for female children.

During a one-day workshop titled “She Engineer and Digitalization,” held in Calabar, the chairperson of the local chapter, Justina John Ulafor, expressed concern about the shortage of female engineers in the country.

Engineer Ulafor emphasized the association’s commitment to raise awareness and inspire young girls to recognize the value and advantages of pursuing a career in engineering.

To achieve this, they have conducted STEM exams to encourage secondary school students, particularly girls, to engage in science and consider engineering as a potential career path.

She said: “We have done our STEM exams to see how we can encourage the girl-child students in the secondary school to do the exams.

“We want to bridge the gap through what we are doing—encouraging the girl child to do science by taking up a career in engineering.

Their primary goal is to bridge the gender gap and foster an environment where more female students pursue engineering.

For those who have already embarked on engineering careers, the association provides mentorship programs and Capacity Building in Entrepreneurship to equip them with essential skills.

“For others who are already engineers, we encourage them to stay put through a mentorship programme, Capacity Building in Entrepreneurship, because an engineer is supposed to be an entrepreneur,” she continued.

Engineer Faith Edu, the incoming chairman, reiterated the mission’s core objective of empowering and motivating the girl child to embrace engineering, thereby breaking stereotypes associated with gender roles in this field.

In her words:

“encourage the girl child towards pursuing a career in engineering and breaking stereotypes.”

The event also featured scholarship awards and recognition to further support and celebrate young female talents in engineering.
