Nigerian University Reacts as Rainstorm Destroys Iconic Amphitheatre

A severe rainstorm on Thursday morning, wreaked havoc at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, damaging an iconic structure in the institution and leaving several injured.

A severe rainstorm on Thursday morning wreaked havoc at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, causing extensive damage to an iconic structure and leaving several students injured.

The affected building is the Amphitheatre of the Oduduwa Hall, where first-year students were attending an early morning lecture when the incident occurred.

University spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident in a statement but refrained from providing specific details regarding the number of students affected.

However, according to student Gbolahan Latinwo who spoke with Premium Times, six students sustained injuries as a result of the incident. Two of the injured students were subsequently referred to the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital before being transferred to the university teaching hospital for further medical attention.

Mr. Olarewaju stated that the university management has indefinitely sealed off the lecture hall in response to the incident. Vice-Chancellor Adebayo Bamire, along with other principal officers, promptly visited the medical and health center of the university to ensure that the injured students received adequate medical care.

Additionally, Mr. Bamire personally accompanied two other students requiring more extensive medical attention to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC). The Chief Medical Director, John Okeniyi, oversaw the management of their cases.

In light of the incident, the Vice-Chancellor appealed for calm and urged students and staff to resume their academic and administrative activities without disruption.
