Concerns Rise Over Land Encroachment, Threatening Students’ Safety at OAU

Cursory: Concerns are rising over safety at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) due to unregulated mining activities and land encroachment. Recent events, including the invasion of university land by Ife indigenes to build a fence, highlight the escalating dispute. The federal government’s inaction and the university management’s silence exacerbate fears of potential violence and jeopardize the town-gown relationship. Urgent intervention is needed to ensure the safety of OAU students and staff and protect the integrity of the university’s land.

Concerns are rising over the safety of students and staff at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) as a land dispute escalates. Despite widespread media coverage on unregulated mining activities on OAU grounds, the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals has not addressed the issue, posing a serious threat to lives.

Recently, Ife indigenes reportedly invaded university land near the Poplat Fuelling station with a bulldozer. They claim to have been authorized by the Ife community to erect a fence to mark Ife’s land boundary. However, this contested land includes a three-block student hostel and a university sawmill, both essential facilities.

The university has been unable to utilize this land since 2018 due to hostility from certain elements within the Ife community. Now, they want to go ahead to erect a wall around a hostel which was built with taxpayers’ money with a claim that it is their land. The said land also has the university sawmill which has been there since 1972.

The allocation of a hostel at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) meant to accommodate both boys and girls has been delayed due to threats from elements in the Ife community. The hostel, funded by TETFUND, was set to open for student allocation, but threats of violence forced university management to halt the process.

Reports indicate that the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ogunbodede, and his convoy were attacked by hoodlums on the disputed land. This incident, along with ongoing hostility, suggests that the university is at the mercy of certain elements in Ife.

The delay in allocating the hostel raises concerns about the safety and well-being of OAU students. Without swift intervention from the federal government and local authorities, the situation could escalate into serious violence between the Ife community and the university. Urgent action is needed to resolve the dispute and ensure the safety of all involved.

Amidst growing concerns over land encroachment at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), calls for swift action have intensified. Despite expectations for a statement from university management regarding the issue, silence persists, raising questions about their stance.

Encroaching on land allocated to the university by the federal government reflects a disregard for the town-gown relationship. Such hostility poses serious threats to teaching, learning, and research endeavors. Urgent intervention from the federal government is necessary to address the situation.

President Tinubu’s assistance is sought to protect the interests of OAU students and lecturers. The dangers associated with unregulated mining and encroachment on university land cannot be ignored. It is vital for university management to assert its position and cease being bystanders in this critical matter.
