18-Year-Old Breaks 27-Year History, Becomes First Black Valedictorian with 4.67 GPA at U.S. High School

18-year-old Jayden Hughes made history as the first Black valedictorian at Sebastian River High School with a 4.67 GPA, overcoming academic challenges, excelling in rigorous coursework and extracurriculars, and earning admission to top universities with aspirations to become an orthopedic surgeon.

allscho USA — Jayden Hughes, an 18-year-old African American-Hispanic student, has made history at Sebastian River High School in Texas by becoming the first Black valedictorian in the school’s 27-year history. He graduated with an exceptional 4.67 GPA and a 1410 SAT score.

Jayden’s journey wasn’t always smooth. He recalls receiving a 62 in Algebra back in 7th grade and a ‘B’ in a 9th-grade course—experiences that pushed him to work harder. “That B humbled me more than anything. You can’t always be perfect,” he shared.

Since then, Jayden maintained straight A’s and took on an ambitious academic load:

  • Junior Year: 9 classes, including 6 International Baccalaureate (IB) and 1 Advanced Placement (AP) course.
  • Senior Year: Dual enrollment at a local college, 6 more IB courses, and 1 AP class.

Academic and Extracurricular Excellence

In addition to his academic achievements, Jayden:

  • Served as President of the National Honor Society
  • Worked as a Mathnasium tutor
  • Was active in the Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy
  • Worked part-time at Publix, clocking 20–24 hours per week
  • Earned a Biology Technician Certification through his school’s Career & Technical Education program

He attributes his success to his family’s sacrifices. “This is for my family. Their struggles have made me who I am today,” Jayden said.

Jayden has been accepted into top universities including:

  • University of Florida
  • University of Miami
  • Florida State University
  • Duke University (his dream school)

He is considering a path in biotechnology or pre-med, with a long-term goal of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
