Kogi Graduate Found Dead in Abuja Canal

A 29-year-old Kogi State University graduate, Blessing Moshood, was found dead in a canal in Abuja after leaving home following a phone call, sparking fresh concerns over rising insecurity and suspected “one chance” attacks in the Federal Capital Territory.

Residents of Abuja have been left in shock following the death of Blessing Moshood, a 29-year-old graduate of Kogi State University whose body was discovered inside a canal in the Jikwoyi area of the Federal Capital Territory. The tragic incident reportedly happened on Thursday, May 21, after the young woman left her family house in the evening hours.

According to her sister, Abigail Moshood, Blessing stepped out around 8 p.m. after receiving a phone call. About an hour later, she reportedly contacted the family again, explaining that she wanted to briefly return home to pick up her phone charger, which she had forgotten behind before leaving the house.

Concern grew among family members when Blessing failed to return home and all efforts to reach her the next day proved unsuccessful. Abigail explained that the family later heard residents discussing the discovery of a woman’s body inside a canal in Jikwoyi. The description of the deceased’s hairstyle reportedly matched that of her sister, raising immediate fears within the family.

She further revealed that officers from the Jikwoyi Police Station evacuated the corpse from the scene and moved it to a mortuary in Mararaba, Nasarawa State. According to her, the victim’s body was reportedly found half-dressed, wearing only a top. Abigail said she later visited the police station, where officers showed her photographs of the recovered body, confirming that the deceased was indeed her sister.

People living within the neighbourhood described Blessing as a warm, intelligent, and respectful young woman who related well with residents. One resident, identified as Margaret, said the deceased graduated with a Second Class Upper degree in Sociology and was admired for the way she carried herself and communicated confidently with others around her.

Another resident, Abdullahi Musa, called on security agencies to strengthen patrols and security operations around the Jikwoyi Medical Centre axis, noting that the area had witnessed repeated incidents of phone snatching and other forms of criminal activity. Many residents also expressed fears over the growing insecurity affecting parts of Abuja.

The incident has once again renewed public concern over rising cases of attacks linked to suspected “one chance” operators and other violent crimes within the Federal Capital Territory. Police authorities say investigations into the death are ongoing, while residents continue to demand stronger security measures to protect lives and reduce criminal activities across the city.
