Young American Becomes World’s Youngest Professor at 18, Sets Historic Record

An 18-year-old American, Nathan Thomas, has become the youngest professor in history after earning engineering degrees early, teaching at Miami Dade College and encouraging others to pursue success at their own pace.

An American academic, Nathan Thomas, has made history by becoming the youngest professor ever at just 18 years old, breaking a record that had remained untouched for more than 300 years. He achieved the milestone when he joined Miami Dade College as a lecturer in August 2023 at the age of 18 years and 346 days, teaching a programming course for engineering students. His appointment surpassed the long-standing record held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at 19. Nathan also became younger than Alia Sabur, who was recognised as the world’s youngest female professor in 2008.

Nathan’s academic journey began unusually early. He enrolled at Miami Dade College when he was only 10 years old before transferring to Florida International University at 14. By the age of 18, he had already earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering with honours. Despite teaching students who were close to his own age, he said the classroom environment is centred on learning rather than age, making it easier to connect with and support his students.

Speaking about his passion for education, Nathan explained that his love for mathematics developed during childhood and was encouraged by growing up in a family of engineers. He credited his mother with helping him understand difficult concepts in a simple way, an experience that inspired his own teaching style. He said his greatest satisfaction comes from watching students finally grasp ideas they once found challenging, describing those breakthrough moments as rewarding for both the learner and the teacher.

Beyond engineering, Nathan has expanded his ambitions by studying for a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami School of Law while continuing to teach online. He hopes to complete his law degree in 2028 and build a career in intellectual property law, particularly in areas involving science, technology, engineering and mathematics. According to him, the analytical skills he developed through engineering have helped him approach legal studies more effectively.

Outside his academic pursuits, Nathan enjoys an active lifestyle. He plays basketball, tennis and golf, supports the Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots, performs classical piano music and spends his leisure time listening to Drake, EDM and house music. His wide range of interests reflects a balance between his demanding studies and personal hobbies.

Reflecting on his achievements, Nathan encouraged people not to compare their progress with others. He believes everyone follows a unique path and that success comes from remaining consistent, working hard and focusing on personal growth rather than measuring oneself against someone else’s timeline. He said lasting results come with patience, persistence and dedication.
