The NYSC has attributed the delay in paying corps members the new N77,000 minimum wage to a lack of funding, prompting criticism from NANS and calls for a government investigation.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has addressed the ongoing delay in implementing the new N77,000 minimum wage for corps members, attributing the hold-up to insufficient funding.
According to the NYSC, the delay in disbursing the updated allowance is due to the absence of the necessary “cash backing” required to begin payments.
As reported by The Punch, NYSC spokesperson Caroline Embu confirmed on Monday, March 3, 2025, that the funds are still being awaited.
“The cash backing is still being awaited,” Embu stated in response to growing concerns following criticism from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
NANS had slammed the NYSC for continuing to pay corps members the outdated N33,000 allowance, months after the Federal Government approved the wage increase in July 2024.
Speaking on behalf of NANS, National Vice President for Inter-Campus Affairs, Sileola Akinbodunse, expressed frustration that corps members received only N33,000 for their February allowance, instead of the promised N77,000. He noted that NYSC leadership has provided no clear explanation for the continued delay.
Akinbodunse described the situation as unfair, particularly since other government employees have already begun receiving their increased wages. NANS has called on the Federal Government to launch an investigation into the cause of the delay and review how NYSC has managed the wage adjustment process.
“The leadership of NANS will also engage directly with NYSC officials to understand why corps members have yet to receive the new N77,000 minimum wage, especially when NYSC staff are already benefiting from the increase,” Akinbodunse added.
