Ajayi Crowther University has mourned the death of Professor Emeritus Ayo Bamgbose, celebrating Nigeria’s first Professor of Linguistics for his pioneering contributions to language studies, education and the university’s development.
Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Professor Emeritus Ayo Bamgbose, widely recognised as Nigeria’s first Professor of Linguistics. The institution described him as a remarkable scholar whose lifelong contributions greatly influenced the study of linguistics, indigenous languages and education across Nigeria and Africa. Professor Bamgbose passed away on July 25, 2026, at the age of 94.
In a condolence message addressed to his family and the National President of the St. Andrews College Old Boys Association, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Oduwole, praised the late academic as an outstanding intellectual whose impact reached far beyond Nigeria. She noted that he laid the foundation for the development of linguistics as a recognised academic discipline in the country.
The Vice-Chancellor said Professor Bamgbose’s books and research remain valuable resources for scholars and students, especially those interested in African and indigenous languages. She added that his work continues to inspire generations of researchers and language experts around the world.
Professor Oduwole also described his death as a major loss to the academic community and to Ajayi Crowther University. According to her, the university has lost one of its foundational figures whose wisdom, vision and commitment helped shape the institution from its early years.
Beyond his international reputation as a linguist, Professor Bamgbose played an important role in the establishment and growth of Ajayi Crowther University. The university acknowledged that his leadership, guidance and dedication to education left a lasting legacy that will continue to influence the institution and the wider academic community.
The university concluded by extending its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues and associates. It prayed for strength and comfort for those mourning his passing while celebrating a life devoted to scholarship, language development and educational advancement.
