Students, Others Feared Trapped as Three-Storey Hostel Collapses in Anambra

A three-storey hostel in Oko, Anambra State, collapsed late Sunday night, trapping mainly students as emergency responders continue rescue operations while the number of casualties remains unknown.

Several people, believed to be mainly students, are feared trapped or dead after a three-storey hostel collapsed in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, reportedly caved in late on Sunday night, leaving many occupants buried beneath the rubble. The exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed, but emergency responders have rescued several injured victims and taken them to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said a joint rescue operation involving the police, the Anambra State Fire Service, and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) began immediately after authorities received a distress call.

According to Ikenga, security personnel quickly secured the area to prevent further danger while coordinating rescue efforts. He noted that emergency teams are continuing to search the collapsed building for anyone who may still be trapped.

He added that although some victims have already been pulled from the debris and are receiving medical care in Oko, officials are yet to determine the total number of casualties or affected persons because the rescue operation is still ongoing.

The police urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and stay away from the scene to allow emergency workers unrestricted access. Authorities said more updates would be released as verified information becomes available.
