UJ Law Graduate Receives Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence

Nthabiseng Mmutle, who graduated with distinction from the University of Johannesburg’s LLM in Commercial Law programme, received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for outstanding academic achievement after overcoming personal challenges and hopes to continue researching legal solutions for climate resilience and sustainable development.

Nthabiseng Mmutle has received the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Award after graduating with distinction from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) with a Master of Laws (LLM) in Commercial Law. She said her only goal when she began the programme was to graduate with distinction and never imagined receiving one of the university’s highest academic honours. The award, she noted, represents years of perseverance, discipline and consistent hard work, and inspired her to reflect proudly on her five-year academic journey at UJ.

Originally from Bothaville in South Africa’s Free State province, Mmutle had planned to study accounting after completing high school, where she focused on commercial subjects. However, encouragement from family members led her to pursue law instead. As she progressed through her studies, she discovered a passion for commercial law because it combined her interest in commerce with her strengths in problem-solving, numbers and advocacy. Rather than entering legal practice immediately after earning her LLB, she chose to continue her studies through an LLM to strengthen her legal knowledge and research skills.

Her dissertation, supervised by Professor S. Huneberg, explored how parametric insurance could improve climate resilience for vulnerable farmers by providing faster financial assistance after disasters such as droughts and floods. Growing up in a farming community made the topic deeply personal, while the devastating floods that affected KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape further inspired her research. She concluded that innovative insurance systems can improve financial protection and support sustainable development for farming communities.

Mmutle said writing her dissertation taught her the importance of accepting constructive criticism, as regular feedback from her supervisor challenged her to improve her research and sharpen her arguments. Although she experienced self-doubt and imposter syndrome during her postgraduate studies, her greatest challenge came during the final year of her LLB when she lost her mother. She said completing her studies while grieving was extremely difficult, but her mother’s sacrifices motivated her to persevere and succeed.

She also credited the support of her family, friends and Professor Huneberg for helping her grow into a confident researcher. Beyond the classroom, she worked as a law tutor and gained practical experience at the UJ Law Clinic, where she strengthened her communication skills, professionalism and ability to work with clients. These experiences prepared her for the next stage of her legal career.

Mmutle is now serving as a Candidate Attorney at international law firm DLA Piper while hoping to pursue a Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree focused on insurance law, climate resilience and sustainable development. She believes legal research can contribute to solving real-world challenges and hopes her journey inspires young people, especially women, to pursue ambitious goals regardless of their background, emphasising that success comes through commitment, resilience and determination.
