A university student’s claim that his supervisor ordered him to rewrite Chapters One to Three of his project by hand over suspected AI use has gone viral, sparking widespread debate about academic integrity and the growing role of artificial intelligence in higher education.

A university student has gone viral on social media after claiming that his project supervisor rejected his typed research work and instructed him to rewrite Chapters One to Three by hand because he suspected the project had been generated using artificial intelligence (AI).
The student shared his experience in an online post alongside a photograph showing several handwritten pages spread across a table. According to him, the supervisor believed the typed version of the project relied on AI-generated content and insisted that the first three chapters be rewritten with pen and paper.
Expressing his frustration, the student wrote that his supervisor asked him to rewrite the chapters by hand because he believed the work had been copied and pasted from an AI tool.
The image accompanying the post suggested the student complied with the directive by producing handwritten copies of the required chapters.
The incident quickly gained attention online, sparking discussions about the growing use of AI in academic research and how universities are responding to it.
Social media users shared mixed opinions. Some sympathised with the student, arguing that rewriting the work by hand was an excessive requirement. Others defended the supervisor, saying lecturers are becoming more cautious as AI tools become increasingly common in academic writing.
Several commenters also noted that students should fully understand and be able to explain any research they submit, regardless of whether AI was used to assist with drafting or editing.
The viral post has added to the ongoing debate over the role of artificial intelligence in higher education and the measures institutions are adopting to preserve academic integrity.
