ASUU has suspended its two-week warning strike after a NEC meeting, but warned of possible future action if the Federal Government fails to address key demands, including unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, and implementation of the 2009 agreement.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially suspended its two-week warning strike, which began on October 13, 2025, over unresolved issues with the Federal Government.
ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the suspension following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in the early hours of Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
The strike, which drew widespread attention across the country, was launched to demand action on several long-standing issues, including:
- Payment of withheld salaries: Over three months of unpaid wages owed to lecturers
- Unsettled promotion arrears: Dating back more than four years
- Implementation of the 2009 agreement: Focused on improved funding, staff welfare, and university infrastructure
- Release of revitalization funds: To upgrade public universities
- Settlement of third-party deductions: Including cooperative and union dues
ASUU had also issued a one-month ultimatum to the Federal Government to meet these demands, a move backed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which had previously issued its own ultimatum in support of ASUU and other education-based unions.
While the strike is suspended for now, ASUU emphasized that further action could follow if meaningful progress isn’t made on these critical issues affecting the nation’s tertiary education sector.
