FG to Allocate N25bn for Upgrading Laboratories and Workshops in Tertiary Institutions

The Federal Government, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has allocated N25 billion for upgrading equipment in laboratories and workshops across public Tertiary Institutions in the country.

The Federal Government, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has allocated N25 billion for upgrading equipment in laboratories and workshops across public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria.

TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono, announced this on Tuesday in Abuja, following the submission of a report by the TETFund ad hoc Committee on Equipment Upgrade to the Minister of Education, Professor Mamman Tahir.

Echono stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the N25 billion in the 2024 budget to replace outdated equipment in these institutions. The initiative aims to improve the quality of education and support advanced research.

Echono emphasized that previous interventions primarily focused on infrastructure and academic staff training, often neglecting the equipment in laboratories and workshops necessary for hands-on training and cutting-edge research. He highlighted the need for sustained investment over the next five years to ensure ongoing improvements in these facilities.

The initiative also includes an emphasis on ensuring consistent power supply for laboratories and workshops. President Tinubu also approved an additional N5 billion for skills-related equipment specifically for polytechnics to enhance their role as skills development centers and foster community service.

Prof. Hayward Mafuyai, Chairman of the TETFund ad hoc Committee, reported that many institutions were found to have obsolete and non-functional equipment, underscoring the timeliness of this intervention. The new investment aims to modernize these facilities, making them competitive both regionally and internationally.
