A FUTA first-class Physiology graduate sparked online debate after a Lagos clinic rejected her job application with a message encouraging her to seek opportunities they believed were more suitable for her exceptional academic qualifications.
A graduate of the Federal University of Technology Akure has sparked discussion online after sharing the unusual response her friend received from a Lagos clinic following a job application. The graduate, who earned a first-class degree in Physiology, had applied for a position at the clinic with hopes of securing employment in Lagos.
According to a post shared on X by her friend, identified as @_raesparkles, the applicant was not expecting the response she received. Rather than conducting an interview or offering the position, the clinic politely declined her application and suggested that she pursue opportunities that better matched her academic achievements.
In a screenshot of the WhatsApp conversation, the clinic replied to the applicant, Linda Omotayo Aisida, saying that a first-class graduate like her should not lower her standards and that they believed better opportunities were available for her elsewhere. While the message was intended as encouragement, it left many social media users divided.
Linda graduated from FUTA in November 2024 with first-class honours in Physiology. Her friend shared the exchange online, where it quickly gained attention and generated debate about the realities facing highly qualified graduates in Nigeria’s competitive job market.
Some commenters argued that outstanding graduates should be actively sought after by employers rather than struggling to find work. Others felt the clinic acted respectfully by encouraging Linda to aim for positions that better reflected her qualifications and potential.
The discussion also highlighted broader concerns about unemployment and underemployment among Nigerian graduates. Many people noted that academic excellence does not always guarantee immediate job opportunities, forcing even top-performing graduates to apply for positions below their expectations while searching for career advancement.
