From Barefoot Schoolgirl to UK First-Class Graduate: Blessing Okoye’s Inspiring Journey

Blessing Okoye overcame poverty, discouragement, pregnancy and the demands of motherhood to graduate with First Class Honours from the University of Portsmouth and now hopes to use her success to uplift vulnerable families and inspire young mothers.

Blessing Okoye, an Anambra-born wife and mother, has shared her remarkable journey from a difficult childhood to earning a First Class Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and Management from the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. Her achievement, celebrated during the university’s July 2026 graduation ceremony, stands as a testament to resilience, determination and faith despite years of hardship.

Originally from Nibo in Awka South Local Government Area and married to Ikechukwu Ekweli of Awka, Blessing recalled growing up in poverty and facing discouraging remarks from people who believed she would never succeed. She said she often walked barefoot to primary school and was once told she would end up selling pepper in Eke Awka Market because of her family’s financial situation. Instead of allowing those words to define her, she used them as motivation to pursue her dreams.

According to Blessing, studying in the United Kingdom provided a more organised and student-focused learning environment. She praised the structured academic calendar, practical teaching methods, access to digital learning resources, supportive lecturers and strict emphasis on academic integrity. She explained that students are assessed on merit and encouraged to think independently, unlike some of the challenges she observed in Nigeria’s higher education system, including overcrowding, strikes and limited learning resources.

Balancing university studies with family responsibilities was one of her greatest challenges. Before giving birth, she worked two jobs to support her education and family, while carefully planning her schedule to meet academic deadlines. Even during pregnancy, she remained committed to her studies, once standing for nearly five hours to complete an assignment because sitting had become uncomfortable. She credited her husband for providing emotional and practical support throughout her academic journey, while also relying on faith and discipline to stay focused.

Reflecting on the realities of studying abroad, Blessing noted that financial difficulties, adapting to a new education system and balancing work with academics are common obstacles for many international students. She advised prospective students to prepare financially, develop computer skills, understand the academic culture, remain disciplined and never hesitate to seek help when necessary. She stressed that success abroad depends largely on commitment, time management and personal responsibility.

Looking ahead, Blessing hopes to continue her education to the PhD level and establish a non-governmental organisation dedicated to supporting widows and providing educational opportunities for underprivileged children. She encouraged young mothers not to give up on their ambitions because of marriage or parenthood, saying that motherhood should be viewed as a source of strength rather than a limitation. She believes her story proves that with faith, hard work and perseverance, no background is too humble to achieve extraordinary success.
