A LASU student, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, died after sustaining injuries during an armed robbery attack in Iba, Lagos, prompting the university to mourn his loss and cooperate with security agencies investigating the incident.


A student of Lagos State University (LASU), Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, has died after suffering severe injuries during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.
The university confirmed the tragic development in a statement released on Thursday by its Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Olaniyi Jeariogbe. According to the institution, the deceased was a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts.
LASU management expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the incident as heartbreaking. The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, extended condolences to the student’s family, friends, classmates, and loved ones, assuring them that the institution shares in their grief.
Reports gathered by the university revealed that the attack occurred on the night of May 29, 2026, when Otabor and some of his friends were reportedly ambushed by armed robbers outside the university campus in Iba.
Following news of the incident, the university immediately intervened through the Office of the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs. The matter was escalated to the Vice-Chancellor, while university officials maintained close communication with medical personnel responsible for his treatment. LASU also monitored his condition throughout his stay in the hospital.
Despite efforts to save his life, Otabor eventually passed away on June 2, 2026. After receiving confirmation of his death, representatives of the university met with his family, officials of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), and law enforcement agencies handling the case.
The university stated that it is working closely with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the robbery attack and to help bring the perpetrators to justice.
LASU described the student’s death as a painful loss to the university community and prayed for strength and comfort for his family and everyone affected by the tragedy.
The institution further urged members of the public and the university community to support ongoing efforts aimed at improving security and preventing similar incidents in the future.
Students and residents in the Iba area have also expressed concern over rising security challenges, calling for stronger measures to protect lives and property around the community and surrounding neighborhoods.
