The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, has dismissed Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Joseph Ikechebelu and appointed Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi as his successor, effective 22 July 2024, without providing a reason for the dismissal.


The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, has dismissed the institution’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu.
Mr. Ikechebelu, a former deputy vice-chancellor (administration), was appointed in early June to replace Professor Charles Esimone, whose tenure ended on 3 June.
The announcement of the dismissal was made in a letter signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Council, Gregory Mbadiwe, and made available to reporters on Saturday.
No reason was provided for Mr. Ikechebelu’s dismissal.
The letter also announced the appointment of Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi as the new acting vice-chancellor, effective from Monday, 22 July 2024.
Her appointment, which will last for six months, follows Section Four of the First Schedule of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, LFN 2004, as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended) Act 2007.
“The terms and conditions of your appointment are as approved by the federal government for all federal universities,” the letter to Mrs. Arinze-Umobi stated.
