Corper Cries Out Over High Cost of Living in Abuja

An NYSC member serving in Abuja went viral after lamenting that rising food prices, including ₦500 for just five tomatoes, have made her allowance insufficient to meet her basic needs.

A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed frustration over the rising cost of living in Abuja, saying the monthly allowance paid to corps members is no longer sufficient to cover basic needs.

In a video shared online, the corps member lamented the increasing prices of food items, particularly tomatoes. According to her, she visited a local market to buy ingredients for cooking and was shocked to discover that ₦500 could only buy five tomatoes, meaning each tomato cost about ₦100.

The corps member said the situation has made it difficult to manage daily expenses and maintain any savings. She explained that most of her monthly allowance is now spent on feeding alone, leaving little money for transportation, personal needs, and other necessities.

Expressing disappointment, she noted that serving in Abuja has become financially demanding because of the high prices of essential commodities. She added that the economic pressure has made life challenging for many corps members posted to the Federal Capital Territory.

In the emotional video, she complained that all her “allawee” had been exhausted on food expenses and joked that her biggest mistake was choosing to serve in Abuja. She said she no longer has any savings and is struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.

The video has since sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians sharing similar experiences and concerns about the increasing cost of food and other basic necessities across the country.
