After overcoming a rare and aggressive cancer during her senior year, 17-year-old Aubrey Barnett graduated high school and is now pursuing her dream of becoming a pediatric physical therapist to help others heal as she did.
At just 17 years old, Aubrey Barnett of Loganville, USA, has triumphed over a life-threatening illness to graduate from Walnut Grove High School. Diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a rare and aggressive type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Aubrey faced unimaginable challenges during what should have been the most exciting year of her high school journey.
At the start of her senior year, Aubrey was thriving—juggling academics, cross-country, track, cheerleading, and a part-time job. But everything changed when she discovered a lump on her neck. On September 16, 2024, tests confirmed the devastating diagnosis.
“I didn’t believe it at first. I thought, ‘There’s no way I have cancer,’” she recalled.
Her mother, Chancey Barnett, said the lump rapidly grew to the size of her jaw, and the months that followed were grueling. Aubrey underwent intensive chemotherapy, including spinal injections and suffered through painful side effects and complete hair loss. Still, she refused to give up.
Throughout her treatment, her community rallied around her. Even while hospitalized, Aubrey’s classmates crowned her Homecoming Queen, a gesture that lifted her spirits. In February 2025, she rang the victory bell at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, signaling the end of her treatment.
In May 2025, Aubrey walked across the graduation stage, a moment that once seemed impossible. Her principal, Lindsey Allen, described her as a beacon of strength:
“Aubrey’s courage inspired the entire school. Her triumph is a testament to perseverance.”
Now in remission, Aubrey is preparing to attend Emmanuel University, where she’ll continue running track and cross-country. She plans to major in Exercise Science, with dreams of becoming a Pediatric Physical Therapist—so she can help children heal, just as she did.
