Ondo State has indefinitely suspended 27 students from three public secondary schools in Akure over alleged misconduct, including bullying, fighting, truancy, and other acts of indiscipline, pending disciplinary investigations.
The Ondo State Government has suspended 27 students from three public secondary schools in Akure over allegations of serious misconduct.
The affected students are from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas College, and CAC Grammar School. They have been barred from entering their schools or taking part in any academic or extracurricular activities until further notice.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology through its Press Officer, Bisi Lawani, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Akindele Ige, personally visited the affected schools to enforce the disciplinary action.
The ministry explained that the decision followed repeated warnings, meetings, and consultations with school principals and other stakeholders aimed at addressing rising cases of indiscipline. Despite these efforts, some students reportedly continued engaging in unacceptable behaviour.
During meetings with school administrators, Dr. Ige urged principals, vice-principals, and heads of departments to strengthen supervision, improve monitoring, and strictly enforce disciplinary measures in their schools.
He expressed concern over the increasing cases of bullying, fighting, truancy, and the circulation of inappropriate videos on social media, saying such behaviour disrupts learning and damages the reputation of the state’s education system.
The ministry reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, stressing that schools are meant to promote discipline, good character, and academic excellence. It added that the government remains committed to providing a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.
Officials said the suspended students will remain off school premises while their cases are reviewed by the respective school disciplinary committees in collaboration with the ministry. The outcome of the investigations will determine the next course of action.
Dr. Ige also appealed to parents and guardians to take a more active role in monitoring their children’s behaviour, noting that instilling discipline is a shared responsibility between families and schools.
He assured the public that the ministry would continue regular inspections of schools across the state to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
The Permanent Secretary further warned that any student found guilty of bullying, fighting, or other serious acts of misconduct in the future would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with established procedures.
He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to promoting discipline while supporting the overall academic and personal development of students in Ondo State’s public schools.
