MAAUN says former visiting lecturer no longer employed amid sexual harassment allegations

MAAUN says Dr. Nasa’i Gwadabe is no longer its lecturer, denies false claims circulating online, and reaffirms its zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment.

The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has stated that Dr. Nasa’i Gwadabe is no longer affiliated with the institution, following reports linking him to allegations of sexual harassment.

In a statement issued by the university’s Registrar, Habibu Awaisu, the institution explained that Dr. Gwadabe’s one-year appointment as a visiting lecturer expired in May 2026 and was not renewed. The university stressed that he is no longer a member of its academic staff, describing reports identifying him as a current lecturer as inaccurate.

According to MAAUN, visiting lecturers are employed on one-year contracts, with renewal depending on factors such as satisfactory performance, institutional requirements and management approval. It added that Dr. Gwadabe’s contract ended alongside those of several other visiting lecturers.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment, stating that it has a zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment, abuse and exploitation involving students or staff.

MAAUN also revealed that its founder has introduced a ₦5 million reward for any female student who reports and provides credible evidence of sexual harassment or sexual assault involving any lecturer or staff member through the university’s approved reporting channels.

The institution further dismissed claims circulating on social media that a student had been delayed in school for two years because of the matter or that a postgraduate student was among the alleged victims. It described both claims as false, noting that the university only recently graduated its first set of students and has not yet commenced postgraduate programmes.

The management urged members of the public and media organisations to report the issue accurately and avoid describing Dr. Gwadabe as a current member of its staff, maintaining that his employment with the university ended in May 2026.

As of the time the statement was released, efforts to obtain Dr. Gwadabe’s response to the allegations were unsuccessful.
