The Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Abbas-Lawal, has awarded scholarships to 450 indigent students from Kaduna State through the “Malam Balarabe Abbas Lawal Needs-Based Scholarship Initiative,” aimed at supporting students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Speaking virtually during the presentation ceremony in Kaduna on Monday, the minister emphasized his commitment to education, stating, “This initiative demonstrates my dedication to assisting disadvantaged students in our state.” He highlighted that beneficiaries were selected based on financial need and academic performance to ensure the scholarships reach those most in need.
Kaduna State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Muhammad Bello, commended the minister for the unprecedented gesture, describing it as a landmark initiative in the state’s history. “This event challenges other public officers and affluent individuals to support more students,” Bello said.
Halilu Hassan, Chairman of the Selection Committee, explained that over 4,000 applicants were screened to identify the 450 recipients, with payments made directly to their institutions via Remita and bank transfers. Additionally, the minister is sponsoring over 1,000 secondary school students for the 2025 UTME/JAMB exams.
Grateful beneficiaries, including Shagaya Benjamin Maikori from Ahmadu Bello University and Sim Catherine Emmanuel from Kaduna Polytechnic, expressed appreciation, acknowledging the scholarship as vital support for their education and future aspirations.
