Teen Breaks US School’s 159-year-old Record, Becomes first-ever Female to Win Best Graduating Award

Cursory: Meet a young lady who set an outstanding record after emerging as the first-ever black female to clinch the best-graduating award and also broke the 159-year-old record with an outstanding 4.549 GPA.

A brilliant 17-year-old girl named Nina Mitchell has set an outstanding record after emerging as the first-ever black female to clinch the best graduating award of DeKalb High School in Illinois, United States. Nina Mitchell broke the 159-year-old record with an outstanding 4.549 GPA.

Nina Mitchell expressed that she is proud of her achievement as young black girls can now look up to her for inspiration.

“I was very humbled and honored. I am representing Black students and female students. They can look up to me and say, ‘Wow. Nina did it, so I can do it.’ That was really important for me,” she told GMA.

The brilliant young lady was not only exceptional in her education, but she also contributed immensely to her community during her time in the school.

She served as president of the Honor Society and Key Club, was a member of the Spanish Club, and was part of the principal’s advisory board.

Nina’s 75-year-old grandmother, Pearlene Carter was also the valedictorian of Walker High School’s class of 1959 in Coldwater, Mississippi. Nina described her as an inspiration to her success.

“I didn’t get here alone. My parents always set me up for success, and my brothers inspire me to do better,” she said.

“My grandma has always been an inspiration for me, and a role model. She’s a force to be reckoned with. She’s always bragged about me to her friends and has made me feel so loved,” Nina added.

Her father, Darren Mitchell, expressed happiness to see his daughter achieve her goal of graduating as the top of the class.

“I know Nina has gotten a lot of attention for her academic achievement and leadership skills, but why I’m most proud of my daughter is she is a good person,” Mitchell told GMA.

“She treats people with kindness and respect. She has a wonderful heart and is just a great human being.” he added.

Nina was accepted to Harvard University, Stanford, Northwestern and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – where she will attend as a business major to pursue her dream of becoming a Lawyer.
