FG orders VCs to reopen varsities

CURSORY: In the midst of the legal battle between the federal government and ASUU. FG has ordered for the reopening of schools.

Following the ASUU strike and the failed negotiations between FG and the academic union, the federal government filed a suit against the union.

It is to be recalled that the federal government had prayed for the court to order lecturers back to class while the hearing was ongoing.

At first it was denied because it was the issue for determination and therefore could not be resolved before the hearing. and a hearing date was set.

Later on the court granted the plea, stating that it was for national interest and students were entitled to education.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) rejected the order and disclosed that they will appeal the case , which they later did with a 14 grounds of appeal.

As of Monday, the federal government through the National Universities Commission has ordered vice-chancellors to re-open schools and allow students resume lectures.

This was made known in a letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.

The letter which was made exclusively available to The PUNCH on Monday was addressed to all vice-chancellors; Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities.

“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses”, the letter partly reads.
