Cursory: The Senate urged the MDCN to permit Nigerian medical graduates from Ukraine and Sudan to take exams without discrimination. Senate President Godswill Akpiabio expressed confidence in MDCN’s implementation of the resolutions to aid Nigerian medical graduates from conflict-affected nations.
On Tuesday, the Senate called on the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to permit Nigerian medical graduates from Ukraine and Sudan, where academic activities remained uninterrupted by war, to participate in MDCN examinations scheduled for July and November without facing any form of discrimination.
Additionally, the Senate urged the MDCN to expedite plans to decentralize the administration of MDCN exams across the country’s geopolitical zones, akin to the Nigeria Law Schools, in order to alleviate the financial burden on students and their families.
These resolutions were made following the adoption of a motion during Tuesday’s plenary session by Senator Oyewumi Olalere, titled “Discrimination Against Medical Graduands from Ukraine by the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.”
Olalere, in his lead debate, said the issue of medical graduates from Ukraine universities had got the attention of the National Assembly since 2022.He said in 2023, “the House of Representatives and the Ministry of Health concluded with the Medical and Dental Council to allow the students that graduated from medical schools in Ukraine to participate in qualifying exams like other students, or at best, organise a makeup programme for them before the exam.”
In his comments, Senate President Godswill Akpiabio expressed gratitude to the motion’s sponsor and voiced confidence that the resolutions passed by the Senate would be honored by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to alleviate the challenges faced by Nigerian medical graduates from nations affected by war.
