A remarkable teen from Chicago recently celebrated her graduation, having earned a doctoral degree at the age of 17.
Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II embarked on her academic journey at the age of 10 as a freshman at the College of Lake County, focusing on Psychology. After completing her Master of Science from Unity College in 2020, she was accepted into the Doctor of Behavioral Health Management Program at Arizona State University at the age of 15.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Tillman attributes her strong emphasis on education to her family’s background, particularly her grandmother’s involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.
“Education has always been paramount in my family,” Tillman shared with “Good Morning America.” “Aside from the upbringing, I’ve always had a thirst for learning beyond the confines of traditional subjects taught in school.”
Fascinated by psychology from a young age, Tillman’s passion for the field only grew stronger with time.
“Psychology and related fields have always piqued my curiosity,” she explained. “The opportunity to delve deeper into these areas and explore their intricacies was incredibly intriguing to me.”
In December 2023, at just 17 years old, Tillman successfully defended her dissertation, earning her doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health from ASU’s College of Health Solutions. On May 6, she proudly walked at ASU’s commencement ceremonies.
Expressing her excitement for the milestone, Tillman shared, “I love any reason to celebrate and gather with friends and family. Walking at the commencement ceremony, especially with peers I’ve mostly interacted with online, will be incredibly fulfilling.”
Dr. Leslie Manson, a clinical associate professor at ASU, praised Tillman’s achievement, highlighting her as the youngest individual in the school’s history to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health.
Tillman’s journey to success was made possible through the unwavering support of her mother, whom she considers one of her greatest motivators. Inspired by her mother’s resilience and dedication, Tillman founded the Dorothyjeanius STEAM Leadership Institute, aiming to empower young minds through programs that blend art with STEM subjects.
Looking ahead, Tillman approaches her future with optimism, acknowledging that, like any teenager, she is still discovering her dreams and aspirations.
As she continues her journey, Tillman offers advice to fellow youngsters, urging them to be discerning about the influences of social media and emphasizing the importance of self-discovery and perseverance in the face of uncertainty.
