A young woman named Monique Mendes has made history by becoming the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Rochester in New York.
Originally from Jamaica, Monique achieved this milestone during her doctoral studies, unaware of her groundbreaking status until after completing her dissertation.
She is only the second Black individual to receive a PhD in neuroscience from the university and joins a small percentage of Black women with such a degree in the United States.Monique expressed feelings of isolation at times, often being the only Black woman in professional settings.
However, she found solace through a Twitter initiative called @BlackinNeuro, which highlighted Black excellence in neuroscience and connected her with others facing similar challenges. Her passion for biology began in high school, leading her to work in a neuroscience lab where she studied strokes.
Monique’s research focused on microglia—brain cells crucial for immune defense and memory. She plans to continue her research at Stanford University, exploring how glial cells affect learning and memory.
