University of Uyo Lecturer Celebrates Wife’s PhD Success Despite Third-Class Degree

A University of Uyo lecturer, Dr. Edidiong Ukpong, celebrated his wife, Dr. Edoabasi Ukpong, for earning a PhD in Guidance and Counselling despite graduating with a third-class degree and facing years of doubt and discouragement, proving that academic setbacks do not determine one’s future.

A lecturer at the University of Uyo, Dr. Edidiong Ukpong, has celebrated his wife, Dr. Edoabasi Edidiong Ukpong, after she earned a PhD in Guidance and Counselling despite graduating with a third-class bachelor’s degree.

Sharing the achievement on LinkedIn, Ukpong revealed that many people had previously discouraged his wife from pursuing an academic career, insisting that academia was not for her because of her undergraduate result. He admitted that he was initially concerned when she decided to pursue a doctorate, knowing the challenges she would face while balancing marriage, motherhood, business responsibilities, household duties, and doctoral research.

According to him, his wife’s academic journey was marked by doubt, rejection, and criticism, with some people believing her third-class degree had permanently limited her future opportunities. However, she remained determined and refused to let those opinions define her.

Congratulating her on her achievement, Ukpong said the tears she shed after earning her PhD were not simply tears of joy but reflections on how far she had come from a place of doubt and discouragement. He noted that their household now boasts two PhD holders and emphasized that one poor academic result should never be allowed to determine a person’s entire future.

The inspiring story attracted praise from many social media users, who described her success as a powerful example of resilience, perseverance, and the ability to overcome setbacks through hard work and determination.
