Kano University Workers protest over Unpaid Entitlements

SSANU has urged the Kano State Government to settle the unpaid entitlements of it members as they embark on a strike.

T

he Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has urged the Kano State government to settle the unpaid entitlements of its members, highlighting the severe economic difficulties they face.

The North West Zone of SSANU expressed concerns that the Kano State government owes staff at two state-owned universities significant amounts in promotion arrears, hazard arrears, earned allowance arrears, and 2018 minimum wage adjustment arrears.

The affected institutions are Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), formerly known as Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and Yusuf Maitama Sule University (YUMSUK), formerly Northwest University, Kano.

A statement from SSANU, issued after its 6th Regular Executive Council Meeting at Federal University Birnin Kebbi and signed by National Vice President Comrade Aliyu Adamu and Zonal Acting Secretary Comrade Hauwa Abdullahi Danbatta, criticized the government’s failure to pay the 2021 and 2022 promotion arrears, hazard arrears, earned allowance arrears, and consequential adjustment on minimum wage arrears at ADUSTECH.

The statement further noted that YUMSUK staff have not received six months of outstanding consequential adjustment arrears. Additionally, the palliative measures provided to other civil servants in Kano State were not extended to staff at the two universities.

Describing the government’s actions as “absurd,” the North West Zone of SSANU questioned the administration’s commitment to education, citing the prolonged absence of governing councils for over a year at both universities.

SSANU has called on the state government to immediately reconstitute the governing councils of ADUSTECH and YUMSUK and to promptly pay all outstanding salaries and allowances owed to the workers.
