Aggrieved UDS Students Demand Dismissal of University Staff Over Two-Year Certificate Delay

Aggrieved students from the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale have called for the immediate dismissal of certain university staff due to a prolonged delay in issuing their certificates.

Aggrieved students from the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale are calling for the immediate dismissal of certain university staff due to a prolonged delay in issuing their certificates.

Graduates from the 2021/2022 academic year have yet to receive their certificates, despite multiple petitions to the university.

The students, organized under the “Concerned Students of the Sandwich Colleges of Education,” have issued a one-week ultimatum for the university to produce their certificates or face consequences. This group includes students from various sandwich programmes at Tumu, Gambaga, Saint Vincent, Dambai, McCoy, and Al-Faruq Colleges of Education.

Addressing the media in Walewale, the group’s spokesperson, Christy Avuyem, emphasized that the delay has had a detrimental impact on their lives, affecting relationships with parents and spouses, and creating misunderstandings about their academic performance and financial integrity. The lack of certificates has also hindered their ability to pursue further education and job promotions.

The group has criticized several university officials for their roles in the delay. They are calling for the dismissal of Abdul Wahid Mohammed, the University’s Director of Information Communication Technology, accusing him of being unresponsive and unprofessional.

Additionally, they demand the removal of a staff member named Sammy from the Students’ Data System Unit for not authorizing the printing of certificates. The Director of Distance and Continuing Education, Dr. Cecelia Alimatu Issaka, and the Vice Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-Hassan, have also been condemned for their indifference.

The students have appealed to the National Accreditation Board and the Ministry of Education for intervention, insisting that the university’s inaction is unacceptable.
