Breaking News: ASUU and Federal Government to Reconvene on September 6

The Federal Government and ASUU will meet on September 6, 2024, to address ongoing issues, including welfare, university funding, and concerns over past agreements, as lecturers threaten a nationwide strike.

A follow-up meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been scheduled for September 6, 2024.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, after discussions with ASUU leaders on Wednesday at the Federal Ministry of Education.

This meeting follows the union’s national executive council session on August 19, 2024, at the University of Ibadan, where public university lecturers threatened a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s failure to uphold the 2009 renegotiated agreement.

ASUU’s demands focus on improving welfare and university funding, as well as stopping the unchecked expansion of universities.

“Many of ASUU’s concerns are being resolved. For instance, the President has addressed the issue of leaving the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). The delay in implementing this directive is due to bureaucratic processes. However, by our meeting on Monday, some of these issues should be discussed and settled.”

The Minister also urged ASUU to remain considerate and open-minded during negotiations to ensure that all parties’ interests are fairly represented.
