NYSC Blacklists Three Kebbi LGAs Over Insecurity

NYSC has stopped posting corps members to Augie, Arewa, and Sakaba LGAs in Kebbi State due to escalating insecurity, while also raising concerns about the sharp decline in corps members assigned to the state.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that corps members will no longer be posted to three local government areas in Kebbi State due to worsening security challenges. The affected areas are Augie, Arewa, and Sakaba LGAs, which have been classified as unsafe for corps members.

Speaking at the temporary NYSC Orientation Camp in Basura, Jega Local Government Area, the Kebbi State Coordinator, Bala Dabo Kagarko, explained that the decision was taken to protect the lives of corps members. He stated that security concerns had made it impossible for the scheme to continue deploying graduates to those locations.

Kagarko also revealed that the NYSC was forced to relocate its orientation camp from Dakingari to Basura because of increasing insecurity in the area. According to him, the safety of corps members remains the organization’s top priority, prompting the move to a more secure location.

The coordinator expressed concern over the sharp decline in the number of corps members being posted to Kebbi State. He noted that the state now receives the fewest corps members in the country, creating shortages in critical sectors such as healthcare and education. Hospitals are reportedly lacking doctors, while schools are struggling to get enough corps members for teaching and community development roles.

He added that several appeals had been made to relevant authorities to address the security situation and improve the state’s attractiveness to prospective corps members, but no significant response has been received so far.

The security concerns are linked to the recent rise in bandit attacks and insurgent activities in Kebbi State, including incidents associated with the terrorist group known as Lakurawa. The worsening situation has increased fears among residents and government agencies operating in the state.
