NECO plans to summon 40 schools from 17 states for alleged mass cheating during the 2024 SSCE, while reporting a significant reduction in malpractice cases and over 60% of candidates passing both English and Mathematics.
On Thursday, the National Examination Council (NECO) announced its plans to summon the management of 40 secondary schools from 17 states for alleged mass cheating during the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
Prof. Dantani Wushishi, NECO Registrar, made this known during a press conference in Minna, the capital of Niger State, where he also revealed the release of the 2024 SSCE results.
According to Wushishi, 8,437 candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice this year, a significant decrease from 12,030 cases in 2023, marking a 30.1% reduction.
He stated that all schools involved in cheating would be called in for discussions with NECO, after which appropriate penalties would be enforced.
One school in Ekiti State has already been recommended for de-registration due to mass cheating in two core subjects.
“During the conduct of the 2024 SSCE, 40 schools across 17 states were involved in whole-school (mass) cheating. They will be summoned to NECO for discussions, after which sanctions will follow.
“Additionally, one school in Ekiti State has been recommended for de-recognition for widespread cheating in two core subjects and a science subject,” Wushishi stated.
He further noted that 21 exam supervisors in 12 states were recommended for blacklisting due to misconduct, which included poor supervision, aiding malpractice, absconding, extortion, drunkenness, and negligence.
Meanwhile, over 60% of candidates who sat for the 2024 SSCE passed both English Language and Mathematics.
Breaking down the results, Wushishi reported:
- 1,376,423 candidates registered for the examination, consisting of 706,950 males and 669,473 females.
- 1,367,736 candidates sat for the exam, with 702,112 males and 665,624 females.
- 828,824 candidates, or 60.55%, obtained five credits and above, including English and Mathematics.
- 1,147,597 candidates, representing 83.90%, earned five credits and above, regardless of English and Mathematics.
