Seventeen-year-old Muslim Adewale, son of a commercial bus driver and a petty trader, earned the best 2024 WASSCE result in Lagos Education District Six and was awarded a N500,000 scholarship from God’s Covenant Church to support his university education.

Seventeen-year-old Muslim Adewale, a graduate of Birch Freeman Senior High School, Surulere, Lagos, achieved the top result in the 2024 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Lagos Education District Six and was awarded a N500,000 scholarship.
Muslim, who also scored 302 out of 400 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), received his award during the annual merit event organized by Lagos State’s Education District 6, covering the Ikeja, Mushin, and Oshodi-Isolo areas. The scholarship, provided by God’s Covenant Church of All Nations in Ikeja, aims to support underprivileged members of the community.
As a science student, Muslim earned six A’s, including Mathematics, and is awaiting admission to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to study Computer Science. Despite his parents’ humble backgrounds—his father is a bus driver, and his mother sells sachet water—both are deeply committed to their children’s education.
Muslim expressed his surprise and gratitude for the scholarship, which arrived just as he was concerned about affording UNILAG’s fees. He credited his parents for their sacrifices and expressed hopes for further support from other organizations.
During the event, Dr. Shareefah Yusuf, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District 6, congratulated Muslim and other awardees, encouraging them to maintain their outstanding achievements. Out of over 800 teachers nominated for awards, only 36 qualified in categories like Best Principals and outstanding students in the 2024 WASSCE and BECE.
Mr. Olusola Ajala, Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, emphasized the government’s role in promoting hard work among teachers and students. Akintoye Hassan, Lagos NUT Chairman, praised the event for inspiring more dedication from both educators and learners, urging awardees to continue excelling while motivating others.
Hassan concluded that committed teachers should expect rewards not only in the afterlife but also during their careers for their diligence.
