FUTO Shuts Campus, Suspends Activities After Student’s Death Sparks Outrage

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri suspended activities and sent students on a temporary break following the alleged torture-related death of a student, while police arrested three suspects and launched an investigation.

The management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has ordered students to proceed on a two-week break to allow for fumigation and renovation of hostels across the campus. According to the university registrar, Chiedozie Uba, students are expected to resume academic activities on June 15.

At the same time, the institution’s Student Union Government (SUG) announced a one-week suspension of academic activities following the death of a student under controversial circumstances. SUG President Christopher Chukwuebuka said the action was necessary to address growing concerns about student safety and demands for justice.

The student union alleged that the deceased student died after being tortured by members of the university’s Man O’ War unit. According to the union, complaints about brutality and safety issues had previously been brought to the attention of university authorities, but no significant action was taken before the incident occurred.

The SUG stated that academic activities would remain suspended until the university management provides a detailed explanation of the incident, outlines steps being taken to investigate the matter, and introduces measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The union also planned meetings with management to discuss student welfare and security.

Reports indicated that the deceased was a first-year Cyber Security student who allegedly suffered severe torture after being accused of stealing ₦13,500. The incident reportedly occurred on May 30.

Confirming the case, Henry Okoye said three suspects had been arrested and investigations were ongoing. He disclosed that the student sustained critical injuries during the alleged torture, was later pronounced dead at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri, and his body was deposited in a morgue for autopsy. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a full investigation, with police assuring that justice will be served.
