FUTO Student Reportedly Dies Following ₦13,000 Theft Allegation

A 100-level Cybersecurity student at Federal University of Technology Owerri reportedly died after allegedly being assaulted by members of the Man O’ War over accusations of stealing ₦13,000, prompting calls for a full investigation and accountability.

A tragic incident has sparked outrage at the Federal University of Technology Owerri after a 100-level Cybersecurity student reportedly lost his life following an alleged assault linked to a dispute over ₦13,000.

According to reports, the student was accused of stealing ₦13,000 and was subsequently apprehended by members of the Man O’ War operating on the campus. Witnesses claimed that he was detained and subjected to several hours of punishment after the accusation was made.

Sources alleged that the student later became unresponsive during the incident and was pronounced dead shortly afterward. News of his death quickly spread across the university community, triggering anger, grief, and widespread condemnation among students and members of the public.

The development has also renewed concerns about the activities and disciplinary methods of security-related groups within tertiary institutions. Many students and observers have questioned whether such groups should be allowed to carry out arrests or punishments without proper oversight.

Following the incident, calls have intensified for a thorough and transparent investigation. Students and concerned citizens are demanding accountability for those involved and urging authorities to review the role of campus security and disciplinary organizations.

As of the time of reporting, university authorities and relevant security agencies had not released a detailed official statement on the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. Investigations are expected to determine the exact cause of death and establish responsibility for the incident.
