The Niger State House of Assembly has urged the governor to ban sign-out celebrations in schools, citing rising cases of indiscipline and misconduct during these events.

The Niger State House of Assembly has called on Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to issue an executive order banning all Sign-Out or Marker’s Day celebrations across public and private secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.
The motion was presented by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, representative of the Tafa constituency, who raised concerns about the increasingly disruptive nature of these celebrations, which are typically held to mark the end of students’ final year.
According to Hon. Idris, the sign-out tradition—originally meant to celebrate academic milestones—has gradually devolved into displays of indiscipline, immoral behavior, and misconduct. He stressed that such behavior threatens the moral and intellectual standards that the state’s education system aims to uphold.
“What’s intended to be a joyful farewell has now become an avenue for unruly behavior,” he stated during the session.
The motion received full support from fellow lawmakers, many of whom echoed concerns from parents, educators, and the broader public.
If implemented by the Governor, the proposed executive order would formally prohibit sign-out celebrations in all schools across the state in a bid to restore discipline and uphold educational values.
