Bayelsa Students Join Nationwide Protest Against School Abductions

Bayelsa teachers and students joined nationwide protests demanding the rescue of kidnapped Oyo pupils and teachers while calling for stronger security measures in schools across Nigeria.

Students and teachers in Bayelsa State joined the nationwide protest organised by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) over the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

Videos shared on social media on Tuesday showed schoolchildren and educators marching through their communities, singing solidarity songs and calling on the government to secure the release of those still being held captive by kidnappers.

In Sagbama Local Government Area, pupils of Community Primary School, Isoni, were seen standing outside their classrooms in uniform while chanting appeals for the rescue of the kidnapped teachers and students. Protest leader Alex Egbagara urged the Federal Government to respond to the concerns of the Isoni community and ensure the safe return of the victims.

A similar demonstration took place in Ekeremor Local Government Area, where students and staff of Government Secondary School, Aleibiri, staged a peaceful march. The students carried handwritten placards and sang labour solidarity songs as they expressed their frustration over growing insecurity in schools.

The protests attracted reactions from Nigerians online. Many expressed concern about the increasing cases of school kidnappings, while others prayed for the safe return of the victims and called for stronger government action. Some commentators also argued that both public and private schools should participate in the demonstrations to amplify the message.

The Bayelsa protests are part of a wider nationwide campaign by the NUT. Teachers, labour activists, and civil society groups have staged rallies across several states, including Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Kogi, and Plateau, demanding improved security in schools and the immediate rescue of the abducted teachers and pupils in Oyo State.
