Brilliant Nigerian Doctor Wins Rhodes Scholarship, Earns Distinctions in Master’s Degree from Oxford

Dr. Kelechi Prince Chima, a Nigerian medical doctor and Rhodes Scholar, earned a Master’s degree with distinctions from the University of Oxford, excelled in global health initiatives, and is now pursuing a DPhil in Clinical Medicine to tackle global antimicrobial resistance.

Dr. Kelechi Prince Chima, a Nigerian medical doctor and scholar, has achieved another milestone by earning a Master’s degree in International Health and Tropical Medicine (IHTM) from the University of Oxford with distinctions in both his overall grade and dissertation.

Kelechi’s journey to this remarkable achievement began with the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, a fully-funded award covering tuition and providing a living stipend of £18,180 annually. His academic excellence at Oxford earned him the Trinity College Graduate Academic Prize for Excellent Achievement.

During his time at Oxford, Kelechi not only excelled academically but also engaged in impactful initiatives. He served as class representative for a cohort of global health researchers, presented at the United Kingdom Houses of Parliament, and conducted research in Vietnam. Additionally, he was selected as a Fellow of the Saïd Business School Social Impact Lab, co-led the Oxford University Africa Society Innovation Seed Fund, and reached the semi-finals of the Geneva Graduate Institute Challenge 2024 with his team.

Reflecting on his experience, Kelechi highlighted the supportive community at Oxford as one of the greatest gifts of the Rhodes Scholarship. Grateful for the encouragement of his friends, family, mentors, and the Rhodes Trust, he expressed his commitment to leveraging his education to address global health challenges.

Kelechi’s academic journey continues as he embarks on a Doctorate of Philosophy (DPhil) in Clinical Medicine at Oxford, focusing on resilience in diagnostic networks in low- and middle-income countries to combat global antimicrobial resistance.

Before Oxford, Kelechi graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB, BS) with three distinctions from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His inspiring journey serves as a beacon of hope and excellence for aspiring scholars worldwide.
