Rajon Rondo Fulfills Lifelong Promise, Earns Degree from University of Kentucky 20 Years After Leaving for NBA Career

NBA star Rajon Rondo fulfilled a lifelong promise by graduating from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Communications, 20 years after leaving college to pursue a successful 16-year professional basketball career.

NBA legend and former Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has completed a deeply personal mission nearly two decades in the making by graduating from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in Communications. The 39-year-old athlete first enrolled at the university in 2004 and quickly rose to prominence as a standout player. However, he left school in 2006 to enter the NBA Draft, where he was selected 21st overall and launched a remarkable 16-year professional basketball career.

Rondo’s return to academia came after his retirement from the NBA in 2024, demonstrating a profound dedication to personal development beyond the court. His studies were supported by the Cawood Ledford Scholarship, part of the UK Athletics Post-Eligibility Program, which helps former student-athletes complete their education with full academic resources and mentorship.

Known for his high basketball IQ, leadership, and relentless competitiveness, Rondo became a two-time NBA champion and four-time All-Star. Yet, despite his success in the league, he never lost sight of the promise he made to himself—to one day finish what he started.

Graduating in May 2025, Rondo’s achievement has been widely celebrated, with the University of Kentucky and fans across the globe commending his perseverance, humility, and unwavering commitment to education. His story serves as a powerful reminder that growth has no deadline, and that true champions never stop striving—on or off the court.
