Nigerian Woman Living With Sickle Cell Earns Master’s Degree With Distinction From UK University

Amarachi Grace Agiri, a Nigerian woman living with sickle cell disease, earned a Distinction in her Master’s program at the University of Aberdeen after excelling academically, producing impactful research, and contributing widely to her university and global digital-energy community.

A resilient Nigerian woman, Amarachi Grace Agiri, has achieved an extraordinary milestone by earning a Master’s degree in Petroleum Data Management with Distinction from the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom, despite the lifelong challenges of living with sickle cell disease.

Amarachi’s academic journey began in Nigeria, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Gas Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt in 2014. Over the next ten years, she gained industry experience and nurtured her long-held dream of returning to academia, even as sickle cell complications often threatened her progress.

In 2024, she took the bold step to pursue her master’s degree, determined to prove that her health condition would not limit her aspirations. At Aberdeen, she excelled far beyond the classroom, contributing to conversations in digital energy, artificial intelligence, climate risk, and advanced research.

Sharing her achievement on LinkedIn, Amarachi noted that her distinction came from both rigorous coursework and an outstanding research project. Her final thesis, titled “Global CO₂ Emissions: Comparative Trends, Underlying Causes, and Periodicity Analysis Using FFT and Machine Learning,” used artificial intelligence to uncover hidden emission patterns and highlight how digital technologies can drive decarbonisation in the petroleum sector.

Her academic excellence opened doors to international platforms. She represented the University of Aberdeen at major events such as EAGE Digital 2025, sponsored by Microsoft, and ML4EO2025 at the University of Exeter, sponsored by the Energy Institute network. At these events, she delivered a technical presentation on “AI and Remote Sensing for Climate Risk Assessment in Coastal Oil-Producing Regions.”

Beyond academics, Amarachi served her university community in multiple roles: Vice Chair of the SPE Aberdeen Young Professionals Committee, class representative, graduate teaching assistant, chess team member, and active student volunteer. She also founded DataGenie, a digital education platform mentoring young professionals in data and energy fields, while building advanced analytics projects using Python, Power BI, ArcGIS Pro, and petroleum data standards.

Reflecting on her journey, Amarachi described her achievement as a triumph of faith and resilience. “Yes, sickle cell didn’t stop me,” she said, expressing gratitude to her supervisors, mentors, classmates, and faculty who supported her throughout the program.

Her story stands as an inspiring testament to perseverance, excellence, and the power of refusing to be defined by adversity.
