Nkechy Ezeh received a 70-month prison sentence in the United States for a $1.4 million fraud involving donor funds intended for education programmes.

A United States court has sentenced Nkechy Ezeh to 70 months in prison over a fraud scheme involving about $1.4 million in donor funds meant for educational programmes.
According to reports from U.S. authorities, Ezeh was convicted after pleading guilty to charges linked to wire fraud, conspiracy, and tax-related offences connected to the misuse of funds from a nonprofit organisation she previously managed.
Investigators said the professor diverted large sums of money intended for educational and community development projects for personal expenses and other unauthorised uses. The fraudulent activities reportedly lasted for several years before they were uncovered by federal authorities.
The court also ordered restitution as part of the sentence, while prosecutors described the case as a serious breach of trust involving funds donated to support children and educational development initiatives.
The sentencing has drawn attention both in Nigeria and the United States, with many expressing disappointment over the misuse of charitable funds by a respected academic figure.
