Accident After Leaving NYSC Camp
According to Eniola, the accident happened in 2021 after she was asked to leave the NYSC orientation camp due to illness. She had been deployed to Akwa Ibom State but fell sick about two weeks into the programme.
While travelling home, the vehicle she was in was involved in a fatal accident.
She revealed that she was the only person who survived the crash, but she sustained a severe spinal cord injury that left her unable to walk.
Living With Paralysis
Since the accident, Eniola said she has lost all sensation from below her chest and has been confined to a bed.
She explained that she can no longer move her legs or walk and has spent nearly five years living with paralysis. In addition to losing movement, she has also struggled with painful bedsores caused by prolonged immobility.
Scammed While Seeking Treatment
The young woman said her search for treatment exposed her to people who falsely claimed they could cure spinal cord injuries.
According to her, she visited several medical practitioners and unqualified individuals, some of whom allegedly took advantage of her condition. She claimed that one of the treatments resulted in the amputation of one of her toes and left her experiencing persistent electric shock-like sensations in her leg.
Emotional Struggles
Eniola admitted that coping with her condition has been extremely difficult emotionally.
She disclosed that she attempted to take her own life on three occasions because she felt overwhelmed by her inability to move independently or carry out basic daily activities.
Despite those difficult moments, she said surviving the accident has made her appreciate life and given her hope that things can still improve.
